- Abstract
- Two autograph items with chemical notes by Sir Isaac Newton. One of the items is [1] page on 1 sheet measuring 16 x 21 cm. with blank verso, containing 8 lines of a recipe in English by an unidentified writer, with Newton's transcription of the same recipe on 6 lines at the bottom of the same page. The document's incipit line reads, 'Take an ounce [and a quarter?] of gold, 1/2 ounce of dubell [=double] refined silver ....' The second item, [1] page on 1 sheet (31 x 38 cm. folded to 31 x 19 cm.), mostly covers one quarter panel of the sheet with the remainder blank. This second item, partly in Latin and partly in English, has 30 lines all written in Newton's hand in ink, on the mixing and distillation of a lead-like material. The first line begins 'Materia sublimatur,' and has a reference to Basilius Valentinus in the 11th line.
